Taliban government closes beauty salons for women in Afghanistan

The Taliban government in power Afghanistan is going to ban beauty salons for women across the countryto which he gave a period of one month to close.

“The ministry has sent a letter to the municipalities from July 23 to cancel beauty salons,” Mohammad Sadiuq Akig Mahajir, spokesman for the ministry for the promotion of virtue and the prevention of vice, told the Spanish news agency EFE on Tuesday.

In the same message sent to locations across the country, the Taliban government warns that women’s beauty centers must halt all activities during the month of July and that, “once the deadline has passed”, the spaces become illegal.

The measure was taken on the orders of Taliban Supreme Leader Mullah Mawlawi Haibatullah Akhundzad.

This ban, which joins the list of restrictions imposed on Afghan women since the Taliban came to power in August 2021, it also affects one of the few business opportunities in the country.

“Thousands of families headed by women will lose income. This is really hard for us to survive. It’s a kind of torture for us (women),” a makeup artist at a beauty center in Kabul told EFE.

Since Islamic fundamentalists came to power, women have been deprived of their rights and subjected to restrictions such as gender segregation in public places, the imposition of the Islamic headscarf or the obligation to travel with male relatives.

The list that suppresses women’s rights includes a ban on working for non-governmental organizations or attending universities since December last year, an order that followed the ban on women in secondary education.

The reality of women in Afghanistan increasingly resembles the time of the first Taliban regime, which remained in power between 1996 and 2001 and is based on a fundamentalist interpretation of Islam.

The Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention against Vice existed until 2001, after it was abolished after the international military intervention that lasted twenty years and that after the withdrawal of NATO troops, including Portugal, returned to be part of the new fundamentalist government, led by the United States.
