The French president announces an emergency law to speed up the recovery of the damages caused by the riots

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, announced this Tuesday, before the mayors of the cities affected by the riots of the last days, an emergency bill to restore the damage caused.

The French head of state promised financial aid to cities for repairs related to “roads, municipal establishments and schools.”

“We are going to be extremely firm and clear with the insurers, municipality by municipality,” Macron said, during the meeting with the mayors at the Elysée, the presidential palace in Paris.

Despite having expressed a position of prudence in the meeting with the mayors, Macron admitted that the peak of violence has already passed, after several nights of riots in several French cities after the death of 17-year-old Nahel, shot by the police. during a traffic control in Nanterre (just outside Paris) on June 27.

“This is our top priority, it is what we are all looking for,” said the French leader, referring to the return to normality, after a series of riots that resulted in the arrest of more than 3,400 people.

“We are going to introduce an emergency law to speed up all the deadlines, to have a quick reconstruction process,” said the head of state.

Macron also promised support so that communities “can very quickly repair” damaged video surveillance equipment.

After listening to many of the nearly 250 mayors present, Emmanuel Macron acknowledged that there was “unanimity in the room” on the solutions to be given after Nahel’s death.

Macron also expressed his full support and appreciation to the mayors for their actions in the face of the riots.

“If they are here, it is because they were direct and personal victims, because their relatives and loved ones were affected,” said the minister, thanking the effort to contain the acts of violence.

“I want to thank you with the same solemnity with which I thanked the police, municipal agents and firefighters for their work,” said the French president.

The French president regretted that social networks have contributed to highlighting the riots, evoking “a desire for revenge” for the death of Nahel.

According to the French employers’ association Medef, the riots have already caused estimated damage of about one billion euros: 200 commercial establishments were completely looted and 300 bank branches destroyed, as well as 250 street kiosks.

Medef has not yet included a forecast of the possible impact of the incidents on the image of France in terms of tourism.
