Monday was the hottest in the world

The day of this Monday was the hottest ever measured in world terms, exceeding for the first time the average bar of 17 degrees Celsius (ºC), according to the first measurements carried out this Tuesday by a North American agency.

The average daily air temperature at the planet’s surface on July 3 was measured at 17.01°C by a service under the United States Oceans and Atmosphere Agency (NOAA).

This value exceeds the previous daily record (16.92 °C) set on July 24, 2022, according to data from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction, dating back to 1979.

The air temperature, which fluctuates between about 12ºC and 17ºC in terms of daily averages throughout the year, was 16.20ºC in early July between 1979 and 2000.

This record, which still needs to be corroborated by other measurements, can be quickly surpassed, when the Northern Hemisphere enters the summer season and the global average temperature continues to rise as a rule until the end of July/beginning of August.

In early June, average global temperatures were the highest ever recorded in the period by the European Copernicus service, beating previous records by a “substantial margin.”

These observations are probably a preview of what is to come with the phenomenon called El Niño (O Menino) in Castelhano -generally associated with an increase in temperatures on a global scale-, complemented by the effects of climate warming caused by human activity.

On June 8, NOAA had announced the official arrival of O Menino, guaranteeing that it “could lead to new temperature records” in some regions.

In June, several records were broken in Asia, with the UK experiencing its hottest Juno month on record, while Mexico was gripped by an extreme heat wave.

According to the World Meteorological Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations, there is a 66% probability that the global average temperature near the surface will temporarily exceed pre-industrial levels by 1.5ºC during one month between 2023 and 2027.

The year 2022 was the eighth consecutive year that average global temperatures were at least one degree higher than levels observed between 1850 and 1900.
