Bus crashes into ravine, 29 dead, 19 injured

At least 29 people died and 19 were injured when the bus they were traveling in crashed into a canyon in southern Mexico, in a mountainous region of Oaxaca state, on Wednesday, authorities said.

“The numbers we have, 12 hours after the start of the rescue operations, are 29 dead and 19 injured,” prosecutor Bernardo Rodriguez Alamilla said by phone.

The bus, which belonged to a local transport company, had left Mexico City the night before, bound for the village of Santiago de Yosondua.

The accident occurred in the territory of Magdalena Penasco, one of several mountain communities served by local businesses.

The prosecution said it had opened an investigation to determine the causes of the accident, after initially putting forward the hypothesis of a “mechanical failure”.

“Probably the driver lost control” of the bus, which “fell more than 25 meters into the ravine,” Oaxaca government security secretary Jesus Romero said at a news conference.
