Spanish justice has begun the trial of a man accused of defrauding an elderly woman of nearly €300,000 into thinking she was making deposits into an account of God.
The man took advantage of the woman’s mentality and pretended to be God or the Virgin Mary through telephone contacts. In turn, the elderly woman believed she was a saint, the Spanish channel Telecinco reported.
Between 2014 and 2019, the woman put more than 290,000 euros in a box in a shop on Calle Lopes Vega in León.
The payments began after the man contacted the victim by phone, arguing that the “bank of heaven” was more advantageous than earthly banks and that the elderly woman could still build a house in heaven next to her deceased relatives.
“Who says ‘no’ to Our Lord God?” argued the mocked elderly woman, confessing that she was left “without a penny in the bank” and without “not even enough to buy a loaf of bread”.
“I heard the voice and thought it was God. I didn’t dare say anything to my children because I thought it was the word of Our Lord,” he added, quoted by the Spanish press.
The victim, who receives about 800 euros in retirement, even took out two bank loans in order to make payments to the “bank of heaven”.
