An accident at an explosives factory for the mining industry in the Samara region, in central Russia, killed at least six people on Friday and injured two others, according to Russian agencies.
“There was an explosion at the Promsintez factory in Chapayevsk. Six people were killed and two others were injured,” a representative of the emergency services told the state agency TASS.
According to TASS, the explosion occurred during the “dismantling of a technical tube”, but a fire was prevented.
The city of Chapayevsk is located about 40 kilometers from Samara, the capital of the region of the same name.
According to the company’s page on the Russian social network VK, the Promsintez factory is one of the “main explosives producers in Russia” and in the former USSR.
Promsintez manufactures explosives for the mining industry and employs around 1,300 people.
“Factory production is used […] for prospecting for oil and gas reserves and for mining,” the source said.
Fatal industrial accidents are common in Russia, due to negligence or outdated equipment.
Many factories have been operating at full capacity in Russia since the start of the offensive in Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
