Nord Stream 2 no longer leaks gas

Leaks in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which connects Russia with Germany in the Baltic Sea, are no longer active, the Danish energy agency said.

“The water pressure has more or less closed the pipe, so the gas inside cannot get out,” said Ulrich Lissek, a spokesman for the agency, confirming that there is still gas in the pipes. On Twitter, the Danish Energy Agency writes that a “stable pressure” was reached in the pipeline, which led to the end of the leak.

High-powered underwater explosions damaged the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines this week, causing a methane leak.

On Friday, Washington and Moscow blamed each other for trying to sabotage Russian-built gas pipelines.

Clashes between the two countries continued during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York on Friday, which was called by Russia to discuss problems with gas pipelines.

Sweden and Denmark published a report showing that the leaks had been caused by strong underwater explosions in the Baltic Sea.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has pointed the finger at the West, denouncing the attempt to “destroy the energy infrastructure” that feeds central Europe.

In Washington, the White House rejected Putin’s claims about the pipeline, casting suspicion on Russian intentions to “spread misinformation and lies.”

“We are not going to let Russia’s disinformation distract us from its clearly fraudulent attempt to annex Ukrainian territory,” White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said Friday.

The United States has been warning Germany for several years of the risks of becoming dependent on Russian energy.

Attacks on pipelines have prompted energy companies and European governments to tighten security around this energy infrastructure.
