At least 55 dead in two weeks of rain in Pakistan

The monsoon rains in Pakistan have caused 55 deaths in the last two weeks, Pakistani authorities said on Friday.

In Lahore, in the east of the country, rainfall reached record levels on Wednesday, when 19 people died from collapsing roofs and electrocution, they said.

Pakistan’s weather agency warned of the possibility of more rain in the city.

At least eight children have been killed in a landslide in Shangla, in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province that borders Afghanistan, local officials said.

Rescue teams were trying to remove the mud, fearful that other children would be buried.

Heavy rains were also felt in Punjab, Jhelum and Chenab provinces, prompting the disaster management agency to go on high alert fearing flash floods.

Last year, more than 1,700 people died in floods in Pakistan. In 2022, floods caused damage worth 30 billion dollars (18.3 billion euros) in the country.
