At least one person died and 16 people remain missing in the rubble of a collapsed building in the Recife metropolitan area, Pernambuco state.
According to the local press, citing sources from the local fire department, two people have already been rescued alive and taken to hospital.
The collapse occurred at 06:07 local time (10:07 in Lisbon).
The building had been prohibited by court order since 2010, but according to the local press, three families lived in the building.
“There are eight apartments [que desabaram]. We have no information on how many families were there. What we are sure of is that we have 19 victims, three rescued and one dead,” said Captain Robson Roberto, of the Pernambuco Fire Department, quoted by the UOL portal.
