The vice-president of the Italian government and foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, was “unanimously” proposed this Friday to chair the conservative party Forza Italia (FI), to ensure continuity after the death of its founder, Silvio Berlusconi .
The Presidency Commission “unanimously” approved a document proposing Antonio Tajani as the only candidate to lead the FI, which will be presented to the National Council on July 15.
Antonio Tajani, Berlusconi’s “right hand” for many years, who died on June 12, will lead the group to the congress scheduled for 2024.
The FI was no longer the largest conservative party, bringing Berlusconi to power three times.
In the last general election, on September 25, 2022, FI obtained just over 8% of the vote, surpassed by the Brothers of Italy (25.98%) and the League (8.79%).
In the party, they fear that Berlusconi’s death will discourage voters, as they have decided that his name will always appear in the logo.
Meanwhile, the Italian government has called elections for October 22 and 23 in the constituency of Monza, in the region of Lombardy (northern Italy), to guarantee the senate seat that Berlusconi vacated with your death.
