The US decision to supply cluster bombs to Kiev is an “act of desperation” that will have no effect on Moscow’s campaign in Ukraine, Russia’s foreign ministry said on Saturday. “It is an act of desperation and weakness in the face of the failure of the much-lauded Ukrainian counter-offensive,” ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement.
“The latest ‘miracle weapon’ that Washington and Kiev are counting on, without thinking about the dire consequences, will have no effect on the special military operation,” said Zakharova, using Russia’s official term for its campaign in Ukraine.
Moscow’s diplomatic spokeswoman said the decision shows the “aggressive anti-Russian course of the US, which aims to prolong the conflict in Ukraine as long as possible”. He added that Ukraine’s commitments to use the controversial munitions responsibly “are worthless”.
Russia itself has used cluster bombs in Ukraine, weapons that are banned in many parts of the world.
Humanitarian groups have already strongly condemned the US decision to supply cluster bombs.
US President Joe Biden admitted it was “a difficult decision” to supply Ukraine with weapons that can cover several football fields with hundreds of small explosives.
