Ukraine demands progress in Bakhmut but admits difficult situation in the South

Ukrainian military officials claimed this Sunday advances on the Bakhmut front, in the Donetsk region (east), where the Russian army is holding back at some points, but admitted that the situation remains difficult in the south.

“On the Bakhmut front, we are succeeding, the defense forces are advancing and the enemy is trapped in some places,” Commander of the Ukrainian Land Forces Oleksandr Sirski wrote on Telegram.

Sirski accompanied his remarks with a video showing the “excellent work” of the Privid (Ghost) group of the Hetman Bogdan Khmelnitski Separate Presidential Brigade.

“A sniper with the pseudonym ‘Alpha’ is operating. He killed the enemy with a shot from 1,200 meters away,” he wrote, adding that while the sniper worked, the group was pursued by a buzz Russian, which was also shot down.

Bakhmut was taken about a month ago by the mercenaries of the Wagner Group, in the longest and bloodiest battle since the start of the invasion of Ukraine, at the cost of high casualties on both sides, before the private company led by Yevgeny Prigozhin abandoned the place and cede their positions to the regular Russian army and launch an unsuccessful rebellion against the military leadership of Moscow.

The Ukrainian forces do not give up on Bakhmut, however, and, after his fall, they try to win him back in brief advances to the north and south of the city, which has become a symbol for Kiev and Moscow, in a fight which, in addition to air and artillery, involves trench warfare, and dates back to August of last year.

The spokeswoman for the Southern Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Natalia Gumeniuk, stressed in a national news report that “the situation is still quite difficult,” given that “the enemy, unsuccessfully seeking the direction of maximum impact [dos seus ataques}, tenta bombardear todas as áreas povoadas ao longo da linha de frente”.
