Fifteen people, including a Spanish journalist, have been arrested on suspicion of spying for Russia in the context of the February 24, 2022 invasion of Ukraine, according to Polish authorities.
Polish authorities announced a new arrest on Monday, that of a Ukrainian citizen who allegedly participated in espionage actions in favor of Russia.
Official sources quoted by the Polish state news agency PAP indicated that the man, whose identity has not been released, was arrested on June 21 and has already been charged with “membership of an organized criminal group related to espionage activities”.
The Polish Prosecutor’s Office indicated that the man had been in Poland since 2019, adding that he was performing reconnaissance tasks in infrastructure, including military installations.
The man faces a 10-year prison sentence.
So far, Polish authorities have arrested 15 people suspected of spying for Russia, including Spanish journalist Pablo González, who has been detained for 16 months.
González has been detained since February 28, 2022, without any evidence against his release.
Because of this detention, a group of Spanish journalists in the European Parliament last week, together with other organizations and groups, demanded the reporter’s release.
