The environmental activist Greta Thunberg announced on Monday the organization of a protest in defense of the Nature Restoration Law on Tuesday next to the headquarters of the European Parliament (EP) in Strasbourg, France.
The EP debates this Tuesday and votes the following day the approval or rejection of the Nature Restoration Law, on which the 27 Member States of the European Union (EU) have already adopted a negotiating position, which provides for binding objectives for the recovery of land and marine spaces affected by pollution or intensive exploitation.
The activist’s appeal comes at a time when this law is causing divisions in the European chamber and Brussels admits that there is no time to present new legislative proposals.
“Tomorrow [terça-feira] at 08:00 [07h00 em Lisboa] we will protest before the European Parliament in Strasbourg for a strong Law for the Restoration of Nature”, announced the activist, through her account on the social network Twitter, calling on the MEPs to, on Wednesday, “not reject, but vote for in favor of the strongest law possible” to mitigate the climate crisis and stop the loss of biodiversity.
Regarding this law in question, the European Commission stressed this Monday, through a spokesman, that it is “difficult, if not impossible, at this stage of the legislature, to present new legislative proposals”, with the European elections scheduled for June 2024. .
“Therefore, we hope to have a good result in Parliament during the vote that will take place on Wednesday,” said Dana Spinant, at the usual daily press conference of the community executive.
The main political group of the EP, the European People’s Party (EPP, which includes MEPs from the PSD and the CDS) defends the rejection of the text, alleging that it affects agriculture, fishing and renewable energies, without foreseeing additional financial compensation, position that has the support of the extreme right and part of the liberals.
