Cities in Sumi border area evacuated after Russian attacks

Ukrainian military authorities announced this Monday that they had begun evacuating towns in the Sumi region (northeast), near the border with the Russian Federation, in the face of continued bombardments, which killed 17 people in the region over the past 30 to dawn.

The military administration of the Sumi region explained in a statement that attacks against the Ukrainian population near the border have recently intensified, causing the destruction of infrastructure, hospitals, schools and private homes.

The continued bombings, he added, make it impossible to repair these installations and guarantee the supply of food and basic products in the region.

“More importantly, our people are dying,” said the source, who put the number of civilian casualties in Russian attacks at 35 so far. Of the total number, 17 died in the past month alone.

According to military authorities, some civilians in the region, including former rangers, have been killed by “Russian subversion and reconnaissance groups” who are increasingly pushing into Ukraine.

In addition, the military administration has specified that the measure will affect all populations less than five kilometers from the border.

The withdrawal of the civilian population also allows the Ukrainian army, which is conducting a counter-offensive in the east and south of the country, to better respond to Russian attacks from across the border.

It should also be noted that the Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
