The Russian Defense Ministry released Monday images of the Chief of Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, in an alleged meeting, for the first time since the armed rebellion on June 24.
Gerasimov appears in a film released by the Russian Defense Ministry and broadcast via the Telegram digital messaging system at an alleged meeting on missile attacks against Ukraine held on Sunday.
Along with the images, a text was published that makes direct reference to Gerasimov as chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
The Telegram post is quoted by Spanish news agency Europa Press as referring to Gerasimov’s “first public appearance” after the Wagner Group riot.
Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Gerasimov commander of the forces involved in the campaign against Ukraine last January, replacing General Sergei Surovkin, who has also not been seen in public since the armed mutiny of the mercenaries of the Wagner group.
The head of the Russian company that recruits fighters, Yevgeni Progozhin, has been highly critical of Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and General Valery Gerasimov in recent months.
Prigozhin led a military rebellion on June 24 in Russian territory despite having abandoned plans that allegedly included the entry of mercenaries into Moscow, after an agreement reached with the mediation of the head of state of Belarus.
