Erdogan agrees to send Sweden’s NATO accession agreement to Turkish parliament

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, will send Sweden’s accession protocol to NATO as soon as possible, so that it can be ratified by parliament, the Secretary General of the Atlantic Alliance announced on Monday.

The announcement was made by Jens Stoltenberg, at a press conference at the end of a meeting between the President of Turkey and the Prime Minister of Sweden, in Vilnius, Lithuania, a day before the start of the Atlantic Alliance summit.

“It’s a historic day, it’s a true commitment,” said the secretary-general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), unsure when it will be approved for Turkish ratification, the main obstacle to Swedish adherence, but assuring that “it will be as fast as possible”.
