Icelandic volcano erupts again

A volcano in Iceland erupted on Monday, in an uninhabited area about 30 kilometers from the capital, Reykjavik, where lava erupted for the third time in two years.

The eruption took place near a small mountain called Litli Hrutur, located a few kilometers from the sites of two previous eruptions that took place in 2021 and 2022 on the Reykjanes peninsula, southwest of Reykjavik, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Institute.

Images broadcast live by the Icelandic media show an important lava flow that seems to be escaping from a fault.

“The eruption is taking place in a small depression to the north of Litli Hrutur, where the smoke appears, in a northwesterly direction,” the Institute explained.

Icelandic civil protection has called on people not to move to the region.

The volcanic eruptions that have occurred so far in this area have not been of great magnitude, causing no material damage or affecting air traffic.
