Hungary says Sweden’s NATO membership is ‘just a technical matter’

The Hungarian government said on Tuesday that Sweden’s accession process to NATO is “only a technical matter”, giving a favorable signal to the process, a day after Turkey gave its position.

“Our position is clear: the Government supports Stockholm’s accession to the Atlantic Alliance (…). The conclusion of the ratification process is now only a technical matter”, stated the Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

The statement was shared by Szijjarto on the digital platform Facebook, before leaving for the NATO summit in Vilnius.

The Swedish membership issue had a major development on Monday, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreeing to Sweden’s entry into the Atlantic Alliance.

In return, Stockholm guaranteed that it would support Turkey’s efforts to join the European Union (EU), including visa liberalization.

Strengthening the Alliance’s deterrence and defense capabilities is one of the main themes of the summit, which brings together today and Wednesday the 31 current members to discuss a review of the military organization model and new regional plans – a plan whose relevance was strengthened by the Russian Federation The invasion of Ukraine began in February last year.

The summit will also serve to discuss the strengthening of investment by the allies, to respond to this plan, as well as to meet the needs of Ukraine in its war effort.
