Israeli police arrested 42 protesters for “violation of public order”, in a new wave of protests across the country against the reform of the judiciary promoted by Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
Of those arrested, 16 were arrested in Tel Aviv, 15 in the center of the country, eight in Jerusalem and three on the Mediterranean coast, a police spokesman said.
“The Israeli police will continue to allow freedom of expression and protest within the limits of the law, but will not allow violation of public order, violation of traffic rules and risks to all road users,” he said.
Thousands of anti-judiciary reform protesters are occupying Israel’s main highways and cutting off access to major cities such as Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa in another day of protests across the country.
This new “journey of defiance” was convened after Israel’s parliament this morning approved a bill that eliminates the doctrine of reasonableness, allowing the Supreme Court to review and overturn government decisions by assessing whether or not they are reasonable. the pillars of judicial reform.
The leaders of the protests, a movement that brings together people from different sectors from technology to university students and reservists, called on citizens to come together to “protect Israeli democracy”.
In addition, police have dispersed some demonstrators since early Tuesday morning, but about a thousand people continue to block sections of the road connecting Jerusalem to Tel Aviv, where officers used water cannons.
The “day of resistance” will continue in the afternoon, with a rally at Ben Gurion International Airport, following the protesters to the US Embassy in Tel Aviv and to Kaplan Avenue, in that city, which has become the epicenter of the protests since the beginning, 28 weeks ago.
At the same time, protests were also organized before noon in front of the prime minister’s residence, in Jerusalem and in other cities of the country.
