Taiwan’s Defense Ministry detected on Wednesday 38 combat aircraft and nine warships of the Chinese armed forces in the vicinity of the island.
Taiwanese authorities responded by deploying aircraft, ships and ground-based missile systems, the Defense Ministry said on Twitter.
The escalation of tension in the region began with the trip to the island of the then Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, in August last year, and the situation worsened after the visit of the Taiwanese leader, Tsai Ingwen, to the US, where she met several US congressmen, despite warnings from Beijing.
Taiwan has had an independent government since 1949, but China considers the territory under its sovereignty and its fundamental policy towards the island is one of peaceful reunification, under the principle of “one country, two systems”, although it does not exclude the use of force. against “attempts at independence”.
