Brazil goes to vote this Sunday in a polarized environment

Brazil will vote this Sunday in the first round of the general elections that will elect the next president of the country, the governors of the 27 states and hundreds of federal and state deputies.

The current head of state and candidate for reelection, Jair Bolsonaro, and former president Luis Inácio Lula da Silva are vying for the presidency of Brazil in a context of polarization between the radical right that supports the current president and the left led by the candidate of the Workers’ Party (PT).PT).

In addition to Lula da Silva and Jair Bolsonaro, candidates Ciro Gomes, Simone Tebet, Luís Felipe D’Ávila, Soraya Tronicke, Eymael, Padre Kelmon, Leonardo Pericles, Sofia Manzano and Vera Lúcia are also running for the Brazilian presidency.

In these general elections, for the first time, all the polling stations in Brazil will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Brasilia (12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Lisbon), which will force cities located in different time zones to adjust the voting schedule.

An eventual second round of elections is scheduled for October 30.

But according to a poll released this Saturday by the Datafolha institute, Lula da Silva could win the presidential elections in the first round, with 50% of the vote.

More than 80 thousand Brazilians vote in Portugal, more than half in Lisbon

In Portugal, 80,896 Brazilian voters vote, of which 45,273 are in Lisbon, the consulate with the highest number of registrations outside of Brazil.

The total of 45,273 eligible voters in Lisbon represents an increase of more than 100% compared to the previous presidential election in 2018.

Lisbon voters vote for the University of Lisbon, which, as in previous Brazilian elections, made the facilities of the Faculty of Law available again.

The increase in registered voters is reflected in the organization of voting, having gone in the case of Lisbon from the 28 existing electoral colleges in 2018 to 58 in the vote on October 12.

The Lisbon electoral act occupies 33 rooms of the Faculty of Law, spread over three floors, explained the consul general at a press conference this Thursday, and there will be a check-in counter at the entrance, to attend to those who have questions.

In Porto, the number of eligible voters to vote in these elections is 30,098, which represents an increase of 110% compared to those registered in the 2018 presidential elections. which is part of the Polytechnic Institute complex and in total there are 39 electoral colleges.

In the consulate of Faro, 5,525 Brazilian voters vote.

The polls opened at 8:00 a.m. in Lisbon and will close at 5:00 p.m. in the three polling stations that have reinforced security, but if there are still people in the queue at closing time, they will be able to vote.

The Brazilian foreign minister sent a team of 10 people from Brasilia to Portugal, seven of whom are in Lisbon, to ensure the “perfect holding of the general elections” this Sunday, diplomat Paulino Neto said last Thursday.
