The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, said on Wednesday that he will discuss security guarantees for the country “on the way to NATO” with the member states of the Atlantic Alliance.
At the beginning of the NATO summit, which ends this Wednesday in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, Zelensky listed priorities on the agenda in the discussions he will hold with the other countries of the Atlantic Alliance.
The first is “new weapons packages” to help the Ukrainian armed forces on the ground and the second is “an invitation to NATO.”
Regarding the membership, Zelensky said he wanted to be in tune with the other members.
“What we heard and understood is that we will have this invitation when the security measures allow it,” he declared.
In a brief statement, without answering questions, the Ukrainian president concluded: “We will fight today for security guarantees for Ukraine on the path to NATO.”
On the first day of the summit, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that the invitation for Ukraine to join NATO will be made “when there is agreement” of all member states and “conditions are met”, and that there was never a calendar.
