Six dead in ‘unprecedented’ bomb attack in Mexico

At least six people have been killed and 12 wounded in an “unprecedented” bombing attack on security forces near Guadalajara in western Mexico.

“It is something that we have never seen before,” stressed the governor of Jalisco, Enrique Alfaro, who leads one of the most violent states in the country, which has registered 1,095 homicides and 750 disappearances since the beginning of the year.

The governor denounced “a brutal act of terror” that represents a “challenge to the Mexican State as a whole.”

In this country accustomed to violence, attacks with explosives remain relatively rare, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

The governor blamed “organized crime”, without specifically mentioning the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), one of the two most prominent in Mexico.

Among the victims were three policemen, the governor added, and two civilians also died in the attack, according to the prosecutor quoted by the newspaper Milenio.

The assailants used seven “improvised explosive” devices, said the governor, according to whom “the attack was directed against” Jalisco state prosecutors and Tlajomulco municipal police officers.

In this town near Guadalajara, around 200 corpses have been found this year in common graves. These are the alleged victims of the war between the cartels.

The security forces that were the object of the attack went on Tuesday night to the place of the possible discovery of a mass grave, after receiving an anonymous call from the representative of one of the civil organizations that is looking for the disappeared.

According to information from the local affiliate of the Televisa television channel, the explosion occurred near a vehicle carrying police.

Jalisco is the Mexican state (32 in total) with the highest number of disappeared, with around 15,000 out of a total of 111,203 registered since 1962.

In June, a National Guard officer was killed and others injured in a car bomb explosion in the state of Guanajuato.

Last Sunday, in the neighboring state of Michoacán, one person was injured in a drone attack in the town of Apatzingán.

The objective is “to weaken the attack force of the rivals of other cartels, as well as of the security forces, and sow terror among the civilian population,” security consultant David Saucedo told AFP, who spoke about the ‘ narcoterrorism’.
