Southern Europe is facing a heat wave in the coming days. Temperatures reach 40 degrees

A heat wave is hitting several countries in southern Europe and northwest Africa, with possible temperature records in the coming days. Thermometers are expected to exceed 40 degrees in some regions of Spain, France, Greece, Croatia and Turkey.

In Italy, temperatures could reach 48.8 degrees and, therefore, a red alert was issued for ten cities, including Rome, Bologna and Florence. On Tuesday, a 44-year-old man died after collapsing from the heat in the north of the country.

According to Italian newspapers, the man was working painting pedestrian crossings in the city of Lodi, near Milan, when he fainted from the heat. He was taken to the hospital and eventually died.

“We are facing an unbearable heat wave. Perhaps, in the hottest hours, we should take all the necessary precautions to avoid tragedies like the one that happened today in Lodi,” Italian politician Nicola Fratoianni wrote on Twitter.

People were advised to drink at least two liters of water a day and to avoid drinking coffee and alcohol, which are dehydrating. On the streets of Rome, a group of tourists told Reuters they were using sprinklers and thermal water as part of efforts to stay cool.

“We are trying to survive,” said Mariko Desso, who was visiting the southern city of Bari.

Several tourists in Italy have already collapsed due to heat stroke. This heat wave is caused by an air mass from North Africa.
