Lula replaces head of tourism, the second minister to fall in seven months

The Brazilian government confirmed on Thursday that federal deputy Celso Sabino, from the centre-right, will become the new tourism minister, replacing Daniela Carneiro, who resigned amid strong political pressure.

“The president invited Sabino to the Ministry of Tourism, an invitation accepted by the deputy.

The departure of Daniela Carneiro, the second change in Lula da Silva’s cabinet since his inauguration on January 1, was demanded by the União Brasil party, a center-right party that forms part of the base of the government and to which he belongs. Sabino.

União Brasil pushed for her departure after Daniela Carneiro, amid internal party conflicts, resigned from the party, which has 59 of 531 deputies and nine of 81 senators and is a fundamental pillar of government in a parliament with a composition predominantly conservative.

Daniela Carneiro is now in the process of joining the Republican Party, also on the centre-right, but which, unlike União Brasil, maintains an “independent” position vis-à-vis Lula da Silva’s government.

The previous change of government was that of the Presidency’s Minister of Institutional Security, Reserve General Marco Edson Gonçalves Dias, who resigned in April after footage was released casting doubt on his conduct during the attack on the headquarters of the Three Powers, in Brasilia, on January 8.

The departure of Daniela Carneiro also means a drop in the number of women in the cabinet, which now stands at 10 against 27 men, further moving the government away from the gender equality pledged by Lula da Silva during last year’s election campaign.
