Hungary’s prime minister, the ultra-nationalist Viktor Orbán, this Friday accused the West of wanting to prolong the war in Ukraine and that Hungary is therefore “preparing” for a protracted conflict.
“Western people want war. There is a majority of countries that support war,” Órban told public radio Kossuth without ever directly naming Russia as the country that initiated the invasion last February.
As for Kiev’s intentions to join NATO, Hungary’s prime minister believed that this is an understandable but mistaken ambition.
“Ukrainian demands (for integration into the Atlantic Alliance) are understandable, but if they were met, we would get involved in World War III,” Órban said. talk about the last NATO summit that took place in Vilnius.
The Hungarian top man also criticized the communication style of the Ukrainian leadership, saying it is “aggressive and demanding”.
On the other hand, he accused countries sending weapons to Ukraine of “going away from peace”.
Hungary has not yet ratified Sweden’s NATO membership, and Órban has yet to specify when the matter will be taken to Budapest’s parliament.
Órban is considered the leader of the European bloc closest to Moscow, but despite criticism of sanctions against Russia – due to its invasion of Ukraine – he approved all the restrictive measures adopted by the European Union against Moscow.
