A magnitude 7.4 earthquake that was felt this Sunday in Alaska prompted authorities to issue a tsunami warning in several regions of the US state, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 21 kilometers on the Alaska Peninsula, 90 kilometers southwest of the city of Sand Point, at 7:48 am Lisbon time.
According to the National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, a tsunami warning has been declared for southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula.
“For the Pacific Rim of the United States and Canada, the tsunami hazard level is currently being assessed,” it added.
Alaska is part of the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire.
In March 1964, Alaska was struck by a magnitude 9.2 earthquake, the strongest ever recorded in North America.
The earthquake then devastated the city of Anchorage and triggered a tsunami that hit the Gulf of Alaska, the west coast of the United States, and Hawaii. The earthquake and tsunami killed more than 250 people.
