Ukrainian maritime ‘drones’ were used for this morning’s attack on the Crimean bridge, which had to be closed after being hit by several explosions, the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform reported.
The state news agency cites anonymous sources from the Ukrainian secret services (SBU) and the country’s navy, two components of the Ukrainian security forces.
“It was difficult to get to the bridge, but in the end we did it,” an SBU representative was quoted as saying by Ukrinform, stressing that the bridge is a legitimate target for Ukraine as it was built on occupied Ukrainian territory.
According to the same sources, the attack was carried out on Sunday night by maritime drones that moved to the surface of the water and damaged the structure.
Russian authorities acknowledged the existence of an “emergency” on the bridge and reported the deaths of two civilians.
The longest bridge in Europe at 19 km, the bridge was built after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and connects this Black Sea peninsula with Russia.
Also running by rail, the link is a major supply artery for Russia’s war in Ukraine.
In October of last year, a booby-trapped truck exploded on this bridge, killing five.
