Spain: “abnormally high temperatures” are expected this week

The thermometer will reach very high temperatures on July 17 in Spain, with mercury 5 to 10°C above average. 44 ºC could be exceeded in the south of the country.

Mercury continues to rise in the Iberian Peninsula. Spain will suffocate again starting this Monday due to the “abnormally high temperatures” of the season, the National Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has announced.

“We will have very high temperatures, unusual in Spain, although we are already in the hottest time of the year,” Aemet said on his Twitter account, referring to a mercury that could exceed 44ºC in the Córdoba region in Andalusia (south ), even locally breaking new temperature records.

Temperatures 5 to 10°C above average

These “abnormally high” temperatures will be on Monday “between 5 and 10°C above the average in much of the interior of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands.” The situation will worsen on Tuesday as in some places the mercury could be “between 10 to 15°C” above normal.

The object of all attention: the fire on the Spanish island of La Palma, in the Canary Islands, off the African coast, which broke out on Saturday morning and decreased in intensity on Sunday thanks to a drop in temperatures. Still being fought by hundreds of firefighters, its evolution continues to be “favourable”, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.

A total of 4,000 hectares of land burned and 4,000 people had to be evacuated, some of whom have already been able to reach their homes, according to authorities.

Intense heat forecast through Wednesday

In 2022, nearly 500 fires devoured more than 300,000 hectares in Spain, a record in Europe, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis).

The year 2023 promises to be just as risky for this country hit hard by climate change with almost 68,000 hectares burned since the beginning of the year.

The episode of intense heat is expected to last until Wednesday and from Thursday temperatures are expected to drop.

A sign of global warming, the harvest has already begun in certain areas of Andalusia, two weeks in advance.
