A passenger on a private plane connecting New York to Massachusetts, in the United States, made an emergency landing after the pilot suffered a medical emergency in mid-flight.
The 80-year-old pilot was preparing to approach the Martha’s Vineyard airport last Saturday when he felt unwell.
The sole passenger on board took control of the six-seater plane and managed to make an emergency landing near the runway, on a grassy area.
Although the landing gear did not activate, the aircraft – a Piper Meridian aircraft – withstood the impact with only the left wing broken and the two people on board survived.
The airport was temporarily closed and the pilot was removed from the plane “with serious risk to his life”, it is not specified whether due to the medical problem suffered during the flight or as a consequence of the injuries caused by the landing.
The passenger was not injured, the state police said, quoted by the local newspaper Vineyard Gazette.
