Europe is the continent with the fastest rate of warming

Europe is currently the continent with the fastest warming rate in the world and may continue to record temperature records in the coming days on the Italian islands of Sicily and Sardinia, where the European space agency, quoted by AFP, forecasts that thermometers will reach 48 degrees.

The heat wave that affects the northern hemisphere continues this Tuesday with active fires in Greece and the US, as well as a possible temperature record for the European continent, in Italy. Health authorities have issued extreme heat warnings in the US, Europe and Asia, with recommendations to stay hydrated and for people to protect themselves from the sun in yet another demonstration of the direct effects of climate change.

The current temperature record on the European continent is 48.8 degrees, recorded in Sicily in 2021, the UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirmed on Monday. However, the European space agency warned that this “record could be broken in the coming days.”

According to the WMO, the world has just experienced the hottest June on record and July could follow suit.

This Tuesday, the WMO warned that the world must prepare for more intense heat waves, which cause fires and threaten the health of the population.

“These events will continue to increase in intensity and the world needs to prepare for more intense heat waves,” added John Nairn, an extreme heat expert with the UN-affiliated World Meteorological Organization.
