India opens the world’s tallest office building

The recently opened Surat Diamond Bourse, the largest office building in the world, is also India’s second diamond shopping mall, where approximately 90% of the world’s diamonds are polished.

The building was designed after an international competition by the Indian architectural firm Morphogenesis and should accommodate 65,000 professionals in the diamond sector.

Surat Diamond Exchange surpassed the Pentagon building in size with a floor space of over 659,000 square meters.

The CEO of the project claims that its size was dictated by demand and that all offices were already bought by diamond companies before construction.

The development, with an investment of 300 million euros, has a succession of nine rectangular structures extending from a central “spine”. It has marble floors and light-filled atriums connecting more than 4,700 offices.

After four years of construction, the project will be inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
