An earthquake of magnitude 6.8 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter on the coast, struck El Salvador on Tuesday, having been felt in several cities in other Central American countries.

The earthquake was recorded at 6:22 p.m. (01:22 a.m. this Wednesday in Lisbon), off the coast of the eastern department of Usulután, 66 kilometers south of El Espino beach, and at a depth of 51.48 kilometers , according to the monitoring center. of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources of El Salvador (MARN).

MARN stressed that there was no tsunami threat.

So far, the authorities are unaware of the existence of victims or material damage. Users of social networks assured that, in some areas, the electricity and the telephone network were cut off, the EFE agency announced.

The local press reported that the alarms of government entities were activated and the employees had to be evicted, EFE added.

The quake was also felt in Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, according to MARN.

Most of the earthquakes in El Salvador occur in the waters of the Pacific Ocean and at greater depths.

In 2021, the country registered two earthquakes, measuring 7.7 and 6.6 on the open Richter scale.
