Brazilian President Lula da Silva highlighted this Wednesday the “exceptional moment” of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Portugal, ironically saying that “in a while” the number of Brazilians in Portugal “will exceed that of the Portuguese population.” .
“Brazil is experiencing an exceptional moment in its relationship with Portugal,” said the Brazilian head of state in an interview with the international press in Brussels and in response to a question from the Lusa agency, after taking part in a two-day European Union summit with Latin America and the Caribbean.
Lula da Silva ironized: “If Portugal discovered Brazil in 1500, Brazil discovered Portugal in 2023, that is, because of the number of Brazilians Portugal has today, it will soon be there in greater numbers than the Portuguese population”.
Asked about talks with the Portuguese prime minister during the European summit, which took place in Brussels on Monday and Tuesday, the Brazilian president said he would not speak “about the war with António Costa”.
“By the way, I didn’t [uma reunião] bilaterally with Antonio Costa. I had tried to arrange a meeting with António Costa so that we could talk about other matters and improve our relationship, but he had to leave early, so that was not possible,” he added.
