Brazil’s president on Wednesday said the summit between the European Union (EU) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) was “extremely successful” as it highlighted European interest and marked the “opening of Brazil” guaranteed.
“It was an extremely successful meeting and of all the meetings I attended, it was the most successful,” said Lula da Silva.in an interview with the international press in Brussels, including Lusa, at the end of the two-day EU-CELAC summit earlier this week.
In this interview, the Brazilian head of state justified the success of the meeting by addressing current issues: “possibly because of the dispute between the United States and China, possibly because of China’s investments in Africa and Latin America, the new Silk Road and possibly the war “of Ukraine caused by the Russian invasion”.
“The fact that we held the CELAC meeting with the participation of nearly 60 countries unequivocally showed the EU’s interest in setting its sights on Latin America,” he noted, assure that he has never seen “so much political and economic interest” from European countries.
According to the Brazilian president Brasilia “regains the pleasure of doing international politics and its leading role”.
“I think it’s important for Brazil to open up […] and we are not going to pass up this opportunity,” he assured.
Lula da Silva concluded that he was “happy about this meeting”, having had 10 bilateral meetings and even meeting with the Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa.
What was the first EU-CELAC summit in eight years, which brought together more than 50 leaders from both regional blocs in Brussels, was marked by the differing views on the war in Ukraine, namely Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua, and it was the latter country almost blocked the final statement, which was reached by consensus at the last minute.
