Thailand’s Constitutional Court suspends the term of office of the prime minister-designate

Thailand’s Constitutional Court this Wednesday suspended deputy Pita Limjaroenrat, candidate for the post of prime minister, following the victory of the party leading the May legislature.

The court announced that it had accepted a complaint against the leader of the Move Forward party [Avançar]regarding shares owned by Pita, 42, in a television network during the election campaign, which is prohibited by law and could ban the party leader from political life for 20 years.

Thailand’s highest jurisdiction said it voted in favor of suspending the deputy, following a request from the Thai Election Commission.

The Constitutional Court’s decision was announced during a session of Thailand’s National Assembly, which is expected to approve Pita’s candidacy for prime minister later today.

Despite the suspension, the reformist can still be appointed to the post because under Thai law, the head of government is not required to be a member of the legislature, but he cannot participate in the vote nor is he allowed to remain in office. the hemisphere.

Last week, in the first vote of parliament, Pita obtained 321 votes and failed to elect the deputies as Thai prime minister by 55 votes.

However, the reformist has already announced that he will withdraw his candidacy for prime minister if he loses today’s vote, following an initial setback last Thursday.
