El Salvador records 139 aftershocks after Tuesday’s 6.8 earthquake

El Salvador registered 139 aftershocks, after the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred this Tuesday, indicated the Salvadoran Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN).

Around 40 aftershocks were felt by the population, especially in the eastern part of the country, with magnitudes ranging between 3.5 and 5.4 on the Richter scale, MARN said in a statement.

The earthquake was recorded off the coast of the eastern department of Usulután, 66 kilometers south of El Espino beach, and at a depth of 51.48 kilometers, according to the MARN monitoring center, adding that it was felt in neighboring countries. from Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. .

Most of the earthquakes in El Salvador occur in the waters of the Pacific Ocean and at greater depths.

In 2021, the country registered two earthquakes, measuring 7.7 and 6.6 on the open Richter scale.
