Russia attacked the Ukrainian regions of Odessa and Mikolayiv (south) on Wednesday night, with a total of 19 cruise missiles aimed at “ports, docks, homes and businesses,” the Ukrainian Air Force said on Thursday.
This is the third night in a row that Russia has attacked port facilities in southern Ukraine, after Moscow announced on Monday the suspension of the grain export agreement, according to which it promised to allow Ukrainian grain to leave through the Sea. Black will no longer attack the infrastructure related to agricultural production and export.
“The occupiers have again attacked the southern region of Ukraine,” the Air Force report read.
“This time Odessa and Mikolayiv were the targets of the missiles,” he added.
The attack caused more than twenty injuries in both regions and the missiles damaged or destroyed several buildings, the damage caused to the port infrastructure being unknown.
In addition to the 19 missiles, Russia launched, on Wednesday night, 19 ‘shahed’ kamikaze drones against Ukrainian territory, according to the Air Force, which managed to intercept five missiles and 13 drones.
In last night’s address to the nation, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky asked the allies for more anti-aircraft systems to protect cities and ports.
Wednesday’s missile attack destroyed several silos in the Odessa region’s Chornomorsk port, one of three Black Sea ports through which Ukraine exports grain.
Around 60,000 tons that were supposed to be exported to China were lost as a result of this attack, which caused damage to the port that could take around a year to repair, according to Kernel, which owns the damaged infrastructure.
If Russian attacks on ports continue, Kernel warned in a statement, grain prices could rise by 30-40%.
Ukraine has denounced that the Russian attacks on the ports and the suspension of the cereal agreement are an attempt to provoke food riots in Africa and Asia, continents that depend to a large extent on Ukrainian cereals, to provoke a refugee crisis that will affect the allies.
