Poland warns of large-scale Russian infiltration attempts in the country

The minister responsible for Polish intelligence, Stanislaw Zaryn, warned on Friday of “massive infiltration attempts” by “agents serving Russia” in Poland.

In an interview published Friday, Stanislaw Zaryn, who coordinates Poland’s border security and intelligence services, said that after Warsaw’s decision to expel 45 diplomats from the Russian embassy in March 2022, “Russian authorities were stunned”. activities through their diplomatic team”.

According to the Polish minister, Russia was forced to “recruit new people to try to infiltrate Poland on a large scale”, as “for obvious reasons today the world pays much more attention to Poland” than in the past and the demand for information across the country has grown considerably.

“We saw an increase [da atividade] in Russian and Belarusian services, which was confirmed by the numbers: in the past 14 months, we have detained a total of 22 spies from these two countries,” Zaryn underlined.

New information about a person arrested on June 21 in Silesia, a region of southern Poland, who was accused of planning sabotage on Russian orders, revealed that the alleged spy, a Ukrainian national, was preparing an attack with explosives against the railway lines through which aid travels to Ukraine.

In posts published on his social networks, Zaryn also referred to the presence of Wagner Group mercenaries in Belarus and wrote that Poland is “monitoring the situation and controlling what they are doing and where the group members are” paramilitary .

On the reports of alleged joint training of the Belarusian army and the mercenaries of the Wagner Group, Zaryn stated that such a situation “is not surprising”.

The Polish minister added that the mercenaries of the group led by Yevgeny Prigozhin went to Belarus not to end their activities, but to “continue the missions of the Kremlin (Russian presidency)”.

According to Zaryn, “more than 1,000” mercenaries from the Wagner Group may be in a temporary camp about 50 miles from the Belarusian capital Minsk.

Warsaw decided a few days ago to transfer two military units to bases near the border with Belarus.
