The French president’s foreign policy adviser said “there are indications” that China is providing military aid to Russia, although it may involve dual-use technology and non-lethal equipment.
“Yes, there is evidence that they do things we’d rather not do,” the adviser, Emmanuel Bonne, told CNN on the sidelines of the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado, United States. “Well… military equipment… As far as we know, they have provided Russia with a great military capability,” declared .
However, other employees consulted by the same television channel said that this help would be technological, such as non-lethal equipment such as helmets and anti-ballistic vests.
“What we need most is China’s abstinence. We want them to understand that Ukraine is a conflict of global magnitude and that we cannot offer Ukraine defeat (…) what is at stake in Ukraine is much more than Ukraine’s sovereignty. It is largely about the stability of the world,” Borne stressed.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, China has declared itself neutral and even presented itself as a middleman in the conflict. However, Kiev’s partners urged Beijing to show more determination and condemn Moscow’s aggression.
Earlier this year, the United States and its allies accused China of supporting Russia by not cutting economic ties.
Some of the statements were described as defamatory by Beijing, which was defending its sovereignty to abide by its own trade agreements and not follow Western unilateral sanctions.
In March, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Moscow and after meeting his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, referred to a “new era” in deepening relations between the two countries.
The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
