Russia halts traffic on the Crimean bridge for fear of a new attack

Russian authorities this Saturday temporarily suspended traffic on the bridge across the Kerch Strait, which connects the annexed peninsula of Crimea to mainland Russia, fearing another Ukrainian attack, as recorded on Monday.

“The circulation of cars on the Crimean bridge has been temporarily suspended,” said the official channel of the Telegram network, instructing drivers and passengers who are on the bridge or in the control zone to keep calm and obey the instructions of the security forces.

Ukraine’s President Volodymir Zelensky warned this Friday that the Crimean Bridge is a “hostile” infrastructure built outside international law and must be “neutralised”.

Leonid Slutski, who is responsible for international affairs in the State Duma, said today those statements meant Zelensky took responsibility for “international terrorism”.

This is how Russian President Vladimir Putin described the attack on the bridge carried out by two Ukrainian naval drones on Monday, which also temporarily halted road traffic.

Putin also said Russia would respond “without fail” and in recent days the Russian military has bombed Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea, destroying cargoes of grain destined for export, among other things.

On Monday, traffic on the main bridge connecting the Crimean peninsula to Russia was disrupted after being hit by several explosions.
