A Russian journalist from the Ria Novosti news agency, Rotislav Jouravlev, was killed in the Zaporijia region on Saturday during Ukrainian bombing with fragmentation weapons, according to a statement from the Russian military.
“Units of the Ukrainian armed forces launched an artillery attack against a group of journalists,” the Russian military said, adding that the bombardment left “four journalists with more or less serious injuries”.
The same communiqué, quoted by AFP, indicates that “during the evacuation, Rotislav Jouravlev (…) died as a result of the injuries sustained, after the explosion of a fragmentation weapon”.
The condition of the other three journalists is “stable”, according to the Russian military, according to which they were “quickly transferred to medical facilities” of the Russian Defense Ministry.
According to the Ria Novosti agency, for which the journalist worked, “the attack took place near the village of Pyatikhtky”, in the south of the Zaporijia region.
The journalist’s death was also confirmed by Moscow regional governor Yevgeny Balitsky through the Telegram platform, who “expressed his sincere condolences to his family and friends”.
On July 7, the United States announced the deployment of cluster bombs in Ukraine, despite criticism from Germany and other countries and even from human rights groups, particularly for the potential impact on the civilian population.
Washington confirmed on Thursday that this type of ammunition is already being used on the battlefield, but in an “appropriate and effective” manner.
Russia warned this month that if the United States supplied Ukraine with cluster bombs, its military would use “similar means of destruction”.
