Russia warned on Saturday that those responsible for the death in Ukraine’s Zaporijia region of war correspondent Rostislav Zhuravliov, who worked for the official agency RIA Novosti, will receive “deserved punishment”.
“Those guilty of the brutal retaliation against the Russian journalist will inevitably receive a well-deserved punishment,” Russian Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Maria Zajárova said in a statement.
The diplomat stressed that “responsibility is also shared by those who delivered cluster bombs to their protégés in Kiev” and argued that journalists collected material about alleged attacks by Ukrainian forces on several cities in Zaporijia using cluster bombs, “a weapon banned in many countries”.
The West “shows concern for the safety of journalists only in words, when in practice they are sponsors of terrorists,” he stressed.
Zhuravliov, who turned 34 this week, died of injuries sustained when the car he was traveling in was attacked in Zaporijia.
A photographer, a cameraman and another journalist were also injured, who, according to Russian authorities, received medical care in Russian army field hospitals.
