Putin says Ukraine counteroffensive ‘failed’

Russian President Vladimir Putin told his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko on Sunday that the Ukrainian counter-offensive to drive Russian forces out of Ukraine had “failed”, according to Russian news agencies.

“There is no counteroffensive,” Lukashenko declared, according to the TASS news agency, before being interrupted by Vladimir Putin, who launched: “There is one, but it failed.”

The Russian president met Alexander Lukashenko on Sunday for the first time since Moscow’s close ally helped broker an end to the Wagner group’s rebellion last month, footage released by Minsk showed.

A video released by the Belarusian president’s press office shows the two leaders arriving together at a palace in St. Petersburg, Russia, where bilateral talks will take place.
