Russia suspends planned gas supplies to Italy today

Russian company Gazprom has suspended supplies of gas to Eni scheduled for this Saturday, citing the impossibility of transporting it through Austria, the Italian company announced.

“Gazprom has informed us that it cannot confirm delivery of the requested volumes for todayreferring to the impossibility of transporting the gas through Austria,” Eni said in a statement. As a result, “Russian gas flow to Eni through the Tarvisio access point will be zero today,” the giant added. French agency AFP.

Most of the Russian gas supplied to Italy goes through Ukraine via the TAG pipeline that reaches Tarvisio, in the north of the country, on the border with Austria.

According to an Eni spokesperson quoted by the Italian news agency AGI, Gazprom claims not to be able to comply with the rules necessary to obtain a gas distribution service in Austria.

“We are working with Gazprom to see if it is possible to restart flows to Italy,” the spokesperson said.

Russian gas exports to Europe have steadily declined since the beginning of sanctions against Russia. for invading Ukraine on February 24 of this year.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Eni announced in early March that it would sell its 50% stake in the Blue Stream pipeline, which it also controls along with Russian giant Gazprom.
