New asylum applications in the EU increase by 34% in April

The number of new asylum applications filed in the European Union (EU) rose 34% in April compared to the same month in 2022, to 72,630, according to data released this Tuesday by Eurostat.

According to data from the EU statistical service, Syrians remained, in April, as the largest group of applicants for new applications (9,420), followed by Afghans (7,405), Venezuelans (5,785), Colombians (4,770) and Turks (4,640).

Germany (20,950), Spain (12,910), France (10,260) and Italy (8,175) received the highest number of new applications, together representing almost three quarters (72%) of the total.
