Former US Marine Involved In Prisoner Swap With Russia Injured In Ukraine

Former US Marine Trevor Reed, who was released by the Russians last year in a prisoner exchange with the US, was wounded in combat in Ukraine. The information was confirmed by the State Department, which said Reed “was not involved in any activity on behalf of the US government.” Reed’s health status is unclear, he only knows that he was injured a few weeks ago and was taken to Germany for treatment.

Reed was drunk when he was arrested in Moscow in the summer of 2019 and later sentenced to nine years in prison for assaulting a police officer. In April 2022, after the invasion of Ukraine, the US managed to release him in exchange for that of Konstantin Yaroshenko, a Russian drug trafficker serving 20 years in prison. Meanwhile, Reed traveled to Ukraine, where he joined other volunteer foreign fighters.

That reports the news site The messenger, the first to reveal Reed’s injuries will have stepped on a mine two weeks ago. He was treated in Kiev, but requested a transfer of US aid – which was eventually achieved with the support of an unidentified non-governmental organization. However, authorities did not hide their displeasure at this situation from The Messenger, especially after everything Washington did to secure his release.

The information about Reed comes on the same day the US announced $400 million in additional military aid to Ukraine. “Russia can end this war at any time if it withdraws its troops from Ukraine and stops its relentless attacks on Ukrainian cities and people. Until then, the US and our partners will remain united with Ukraine for as long as it takes.” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said when announcing this support.

On the ground, both sides claim territorial gains. On the Ukrainian side, there will be advances towards the village of Staromayorske in the southeast, close to other recaptured sites in the Donetsk region. In addition, they managed to drive the Russians away from positions near Andriivka, near Bakhmut, to the east. On the Russian side, Moscow claims a two-kilometer advance over four kilometers near Lyman, also in eastern Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Russia announced the approval by the lower house of a law that will increase the maximum age for completing compulsory military service from 27 to 30 years. And the Kremlin revealed that President Vladimir Putin plans to visit China in October, after receiving a visit from Xi Jinping in May.
