Maduro says he supports “reforestation, sanitation and recovery” of the Amazon

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, expressed his support on Tuesday and called on the nations gathered at the IV Summit of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (OTCA) to advance in the “reforestation, sanitation and recovery” of the largest tropical forest of the planet.

“With work, effort and a concrete plan, ready for action, we will advance together in the reforestation, sanitation and recovery of the Amazon, for the well-being of our indigenous peoples,” said Maduro, in a message posted on social networks Twitter .

The president of Venezuela does not participate in the Amazon Summit, which began on Tuesday in the Brazilian city of Belém, but sent the vice president, Delcy Rodríguez.

Since the day before, Maduro, who was one of the expected leaders at the event, suspended the public agenda “by medical indication” due to an ear infection.

On social networks, the Venezuelan official said he felt encouraged to guarantee the survival of the Amazon and guaranteed that the nations that make it up are walking “towards a new humanity.”

At the beginning of the IV Summit of Presidents that make up the Amazon biome, the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, called for the “urgent” resumption of cooperation in the Amazon.

This is the first meeting of the bloc since 2009. In addition to Lula da Silva, the presidents of Bolivia, Luis Arce, Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and Peru, Dina Boluarte, participate.

The presidents Guillermo Lasso (Ecuador), Chan Santokhi (Suriname) and Irfaan Ali (Guyana) are absent for various reasons, although their countries are represented by members of their cabinets.

At the end of this first day, the countries will announce a joint declaration that will include “new tasks and objectives” for the preservation of the Amazon rainforest, according to the opening speech delivered by the Brazilian president.

The Amazon Summit debates will be led by representatives of the eight countries of the bloc and on Wednesday the talks will be extended to the invited countries, including Indonesia, the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which have large tracts of tropical forest. .

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will also be present at this expanded summit since it currently holds the ‘pro tempore’ presidency of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), as well as France, French Guiana, Germany and Norway, contributors to the Amazon Fund. , which promotes sustainable projects in the region.
