The European Commission said on Tuesday that the European Union’s (EU) dependence on Russian fuels has ended, considering that Russian natural gas is “rapidly disappearing” from the European market, according to spokesman Adalbert Jahnz.
“We no longer depend on Russian fossil fuels in general,” he said, emphasizing, at a European Commission press conference, quoted by Efe, that “coal imports have ceased and oil imports are only a fraction of what than they were before.” war”.
In April 2022, European Union (EU) countries agreed to ban Russian coal purchases in response to the invasion of Ukraine, while in June last year they also agreed to a partial embargo on Russian oil.
As for natural gas, the European Commission spokesman stated that, in March 2023, only 8% of all gas imports came from Russia, in contrast to the pre-war situation, when Russian gas accounted for more 50% of EU imports. .
“This is due to a very intensive program to find alternative providers, which the Commission has been very committed to,” Jahnz said at the press conference.
In this sense, the spokesman stressed that, in the last year, the EU “exceeded the objectives” of the RepowerEU plan, designed by Brussels to reduce Moscow’s dependence on gas, oil and coal and reinforce European energy sovereignty.
